Our first days of first grade were a blast! On the first day, we spent some time getting calming our jitters with a story called First Day Jitters. Then, we read a poem called Jitter Juice and enjoyed some real jitter juice to calm our nerves! During math time, we practice counting to 120 with a song and a 120 chart puzzle, which will later become our first math center. In the afternoon, we started learning about Daily 5, the reading structure we will use for the entire year. The first Daily 5 choice we learned about is Read to Self. Before practicing, we discussed the 3 ways to read a book. Then, we started practicing our stamina. Ask your child what the word stamina means! Each column on our stamina chart (above right) represents a practice session. We use a new color every day so we can see how much better our stamina is with each day that we practice. On the first day of our first full week, we enjoyed celebrating a piece of American history by watching a live feed of the solar eclipse while making our own models. Check it out below!
